Given the name of his father’s idol, Mickey Charles Mantle was a baseball prodigy who signed with the New York Yankees in 1949 at the age of seventeen. As he rapidly advanced through the minor leagues, the switch-hitting Mantle was quickly aproclaimed DiMaggio’s heir apparent and the “greatest prospect in baseball history.” Such pressure would cause most to wilt under bright lights of the “Big Apple.” However, despite early growing pains, the stout Oklahoman terrorized American League pitching for more than eighteen seasons. Peering into his Hall of Fame future, Mantle is showcased on this incomparable 1952 Topps #311 rookie card. Graded NM-MT 8 by PSA with an (oc) qualifier, this high number originated from an early Alan Rosen “find.” As one of the most coveted cards in the industry with immense cultural crossover appeal, this “Commerce Comet” meets all of the criteria for the discerning hobbyist. Accentuated by precise registration, the young slugger emerges from a penetrating blue backdrop. The gleaming white perimeter and bold color detailing give the appearance of having been recently unearthed from a wax pack. The problem-free reverse details Mantle’s accolades with crisp red-and-black printing. Left justified factory centering accounts for the qualifier. With 536 career home runs and a charisma that is difficult to match, this important Mantle is a permanent keepsake for baseball historians and Americana collectors alike.
