Bridesmaids no longer, the Brooklyn Dodgers opened the 1956 campaign as defending World Series champions. Felled in five Fall Classic showdowns between 1941 and 1953, each time at the hands of their cross-borough rivals from the Bronx, Flatbush's beloved "Bums" were true to the task in '55, downing the Yankees and exorcising their "runner-up" demons in the process. The offered program/menu was signed by (24) members of that long-awaited championship installment on the eve of the 1956 season opener. In due homage to the champions, a "Welcome Home Dinner” was held at Brooklyn's Hotel St. George on Monday, April 16, 1956 (the Dodgers were to host Philadelphia in the season opener the next day). At the gala event, the Dodger Knot-Hole Club arranged for a dinner and speakers including Vin Scully, skipper Walt Alston and owner Walter O'Malley. The menu shows wear and a horizontal compacting fold, but the blue ink signatures resonate stunning ("9") quality. Executed on the front cover are the pennings of Campanella, Cimoli, Craig, Darnell, Drysdale, Elston, Erskine, Furillo, Gilliam, Hodges, Hughes, Jackson, Koufax, Labine, Lehman, Loes, Neal, Newcombe, Reese, Robinson, Templeton (signed twice), Walker and Zimmer. On the back cover, Dodgers owner Walter O'Malley has signed ("5"), as have (4) unidentified persons. Full photo LOA from James Spence Authentications.
